As we glide into a new era of urban mobility, Dutch e-bike manufacturer VanMoof continues to redefine the cycling experience with its latest launches, the S4 and X4. Building upon the legacy of its predecessors, these new iterations come with noteworthy changes, offering a fine blend of power, reliability, and efficiency. However, it’s essential to understand what these upgrades mean for the consumer.

Shifter

One of the most striking changes to the S4 and X4 is in the shifting mechanism. Departing from the electronic shifters of the S3/X3 and S5/A5 lines — equipped with 4-speed and 3-speed e-shifters respectively — VanMoof has opted for a 2-speed automatic shifter for the S4/X4. This move towards mechanical simplicity not only enhances reliability but also influences the ride dynamics.

The S4/X4’s automatic shifter is a throwback to the system used in the Electrified S2/X2 models but pairs it with the more potent motor from the S3/X3 lineup. This means the S4/X4 now command a torque of 59Nm compared to the 45Nm of the S2/X2. The result is a bicycle that supports the rider more robustly, accelerates quicker, and makes for a more effortless ride.

For those living in hilly areas, the 2-speed system may present a challenge. You’ll likely ascend gradients in the first gear, up to 17 km/h, after which the shifter may engage the second gear. Depending on the incline, this may require more effort than the 4 or 3-speed systems. However, those in flatter regions will find the S4/X4 more than fine.

When it comes to hill-climbing prowess, the VanMoof S2 has certainly demonstrated its capability. However, the subsequent S3/X3 and S5/A5 models have taken this performance to new heights, literally. They both can tackle the same incline in the video at speeds exceeding 25 km/h, providing a noticeably smoother and faster ride.

No display but sound

The S4/X4 also veer away from their predecessors in terms of their display system. They forego both the matrix display of the S3/X3 and the Halo Rings of the S5/A5. This decision, likely made with an eye on simpler design, cost reduction and consumption, means that VanMoof can provide the same range with a smaller battery, an asset for riders seeking longevity in their rides.

Unlocking the S4/X4 involves an improved version of the S3/X3’s kicklock. To disengage the lock, riders will need to roll the bike forwards or backwards. Unlocking can be done via the VanMoof App or by manually entering a three-digit code using buttons on the bike. While there’s no visual feedback, auditory signals provide the necessary confirmation, maintaining the bike’s sleek aesthetics.

This auditory interface extends to the bike’s battery status as well. A series of sounds will inform riders about the battery state, ensuring they’re never caught off guard.

No FindMy

Interestingly, the S4/X4 models diverge from their predecessors in one more notable aspect: the absence of Apple’s ‘Find My’ feature. This functionality, which was a highlight of the S3/X3 and S5/A5 models, enabled users to locate their bikes using the ‘Find My’ network, adding an extra layer of security and peace of mind.

Wider Tires

The S4/X4 come with a new wheel and tire setup. Following the S5’s shift to 27.5" wheel size, the S4 follows suit. However, the S4 boasts wider tires, a feature that’s received positive feedback from initial testers due to improved comfort and stability.

In essence, the VanMoof S4 and X4 represent a shift towards minimalism and mechanical reliability without compromising on power and efficiency. Riders can expect a bike that balances simplicity with performance, resulting in an e-bike that’s ready for the cities of the future.

SP Connect +

In line with the S5/A5 models, the S4/X4 also come equipped with the SP-Connect + mount, facilitating easy attachment of smartphones directly onto the handlebar for easy navigation and control. However, there’s a key difference: the S4/X4 models lack the USB-C port integrated into the handlebar. This means that while the seamless phone mounting capability remains, riders will miss out on the convenience of charging their devices during the ride via a direct connection to the bike.
