UI/UX design concept for the VanMoof App

VanMoof should bring up a new UX/UI and put the app in the center of the riding experience. The weather was not good at the weekend, so instead of riding the bike, I decided to sketch some components/views that I’d like to have.

Part 1 (Jun 9th, 2021)

Starting today, I will share them under this story. In parallel, continue sketching every component and view possible.

Vanmoofer’s VM App UI/UX Concept — Part 1

The main view is enriched with quick access components for navigation. Odometer data and the name of the bike are displayed above the map layer where the current location of the bicycle is displayed. Unlock button is moved to the left below corner for easy access (can be mirrored if you are left-handed). Quick access for assist, gear, and lights is also nice to have if the user wants to have them controlled manually.

The navigation view contains the overview of the route, current and trip-related weather data, battery info during the start and end of the trip. The control component below shows the trip info (distance and time) as well as gives the user the dynamic regulation (eco to boost) of assist and gear settings, using the GPS and map data.

When the user taps ‘ride now’, the navigation starts with the dashboard overlay and/or the music player displayed. The music player gives quick access to the user’s music library and to the speaker selection.

Part 2 (Nov 8th, 2021)

If you ride a VanMoof bicycle, it’s also likely that you use the VanMoof App. The app is mandatory to register the latest models. It gives the possibility to the end-user to operate and monitor the bicycle. Users can unlock the kick-lock, change settings like assist levels, lights, and alarm options. The app also helps the user troubleshooting any error code shown and gets help via support channels. Switching between different bicycles is also supported, so users can have control over all their bicycles bound to their VanMoof account. VanMoof app also features rides and odometer monitoring. In other words, the app and infrastructure have a lot of potentials.

It should be possible to bind different user accounts to connect them as ‘VanMoof buddies’ and bring social interactions. This approach will enable users to share locations, odometer data, the number of rides, and configurations for settings.

The view below displays the number of connections the user has in the VanMoof ecosystem. The naming can be something else since “moof buddies” is something that I made up. :) The map in the view can visualize such information using cluster icons or heatmaps. The clusters can group the “buddy buckets” and make the view cleaner when the user zooms in or out. Next to the buckets, the total km ridden by the riders of the bucket can be displayed.

Another view with a list can help users get more insight on data like rides times, ridden km, charge statistics, and settings.
