In March, I had the unique opportunity to get an exclusive first look at the Cowboy Cross, weeks before its official reveal ( you can read the Cowboy Cross reveal article here ). During the hands-on session, I was also introduced to Cowboy’s new app, which takes gamification to a whole new level. Excited by new features, I couldn’t wait to try the beta version of the app, especially the ‘Game On’ feature with the Cowboy Cruiser, which is the focus of this article: Live Challenges.
From Concept to Reality — Gamification in Bike Apps
Years ago, I discussed the potential of gamification in bike apps within the VanMoof community. Despite the bikes’ capabilities, it seemed VanMoof had other priorities that delayed the implementation of such features. Cowboy, however, has embraced this concept wholeheartedly, offering a mature and engaging experience in their new app.
Evolution of Gamification in the Cowboy App
Gamification isn’t entirely new to Cowboy App. It already boasted personal records, achievements, rider profiles and social channels where users could join communities based on i.e. location and view leaderboards. However, introduction of live challenges marks a significant step forward.
Introducing Live Challenges
The beta app dashboard now features a new tab called “Play”, which offers four distinct challenges: Push, Hit, Burn and Race challenges.
Push Challenge, encourages the rider to push the pedals harder for a specific time like 15 seconds to reach a target power and conquer. 🫸
Hit Challenge, is about keeping the average power above the target until the countdown ends. 💪
Burn Challenge, as the name indicates, focuses on burning calories 🍔🍕🌮🍺🥤 so you pedal your way through the challenge while traking the calories you burned 🔥
Ride Challenge is a real-time duel with another Cowboy rider to cross the finish line in sprint of 1. 🚲 🆚
Personal Experience
My experience with live challenges has been really positive. During the event in Amsterdam, I found myself eager to complete additional rounds just to finish a challenge. The engaging nature of these challenges is evident — during my last ride for instance, I covered extra kilometres to burn calories equivalent to a pint of beer. 🍺 I also raced against another Cowboy rider somewhere in the world about 350 meters, adding a competitive edge to it.
Conclusion
Cowboy has successfully integrated gamification into their new app, making riding more interactive and enjoyable. The live challenges add a dynamic and engaging element, encouraging riders to push their limits, achieve new milestones, and connect with a global community of riders. As someone who has long advocated for such features, it’s exciting to see Cowboy leading the way in making biking not just a mode of transport, but a fun and engaging experience.
